Q&A with Dr. Shen

What is the most important factor in a doctor-patient relationship and why?

Communications! I think communication is important in all relationships. Being able to hear what a patient’s priorities and goals are, helping them understand their treatment plan, and building a trusting doctor-patient partnership all require the ability to clearly communicate with each other.

Do you practice any sports?
Does speed walking in the city to beat being stuck in traffic count? I played tennis and volleyball growing up and learning golf has been on my bucket list for decades already.
What do you enjoy doing when not at work?
Having new experiences in any shape or form. I love traveling to places I’ve never been, trying new restaurants, seeing new art exhibits, meeting new people.
Do you have pets?
I have a young at heart, 11 year old black lab and pit-bull mix that we rescued back in the 2010s.
What would you do for a living if you weren't a doctor?
Being a doctor and being able to help people was always my childhood dream, but a close second would be to work for the United Nations and be involved in refugee work. Meeting so many different people from different walks of lives in the city really shows you how much more work can be done in society and being able to bring a little good into this world would be a privilege.
