Nerve Conduction Studies & Electromyography (NCS/EMG)

What is Nerve Conduction Studies & Electromyography (NCS/EMG)?

Nerve Conduction Studies & Electromyography (NCS/EMG) is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate the neuromuscular function and detect any neural or muscular abnormalities. Your pain management doctor may order an EMG if you display symptoms such as shooting pain, tingling, weakness, numbness, and/or cramping. The test measures the electrical activity of muscles and nerves. Nerves send out electrical signals to make your muscles react in certain ways. As your muscles react, they give off these signals, which can then be measured.

Who needs a Nerve Conduction Studies & Electromyography (NCS/EMG)?

You may need this test if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Numbness
  • Decreased sensation
  • Tingling or frequent feeling of “pins and needles”
  • Radiating pain or burning sensation
  • Muscle spasms or weakness
  • Difficulty performing daily tasks such as walking, buttoning clothes or handling objects

Conditions

The conditions most commonly requiring a nerve conduction studies & electromyography (NCS/EMG) includes, but not limited to:

How is it done?

During the study, tiny electrodes are inserted into different muscle groups to record electrical activity while the muscle is at rest and while it is contracting. Another part of the study, which is called a nerve conduction velocity test (NCV), uses electrode stickers to measure the speed and strength of an electrical impulse through a nerve. Nerves send out electrical signals to make your muscles react in certain ways. As your muscles react, they give off these signals, which can then be measured. Side effects may include some muscle soreness, which rarely lasts more than an hour or two after the exam.
