Q&A with Dr. Bonte
What made you want to become a doctor?
I have always been interested in how things work, biology and science. I also had a family experience who experienced a brain injury that required extensive rehabilitation. I was influenced greatly by the impact of the doctors guiding treatment and reassuring my family along the way.
What do you love about practicing medicine?
I love being able to make a meaningful improvement in the function and quality of life of my patients. I am also very lucky to be in a specialty where I can see both short or long term improvements over the course of my time seeing a patient.
What is your favorite subspecialty topic?
I am very interested in neuromodulation and regenerative orthopedics. Both of these topics are exciting developing areas within pain medicine which can spare patients from pain, disability, surgery, or side effects from medications that have multiple side effects.
What do you wish you could tell every patient (and they would actually do) and why?
I would tell my patients that I can relate to your experience with pain. I am a survivor of testicular cancer which required chemotherapy and surgery. I experienced chronic pain myself as a result of treatment, and thus, I approach treatment through that personal lens. Everyone’s experience with chronic pain is very personal; While I can never fully understand what a patient is going through, I know what it is like to be in chronic pain for months, and its effects on mood, sleep, work, and home life.
What is the most important factor in a doctor-patient relationship and why?
The most important factor is making sure that the therapeutic goals are aligned, as this will significantly impact the treatment. For example, the treatment to help someone whose primary goal is to improve their comfort will be different from someone whose goal is to dance at their daughter’s wedding (with comfort being secondary).
What’s your favorite thing about Hudson Medical Group?
As a private practice focused on comprehensive wellness and musculoskeletal care, we can offer highly personalized and state-of-the-art treatment, and we also collaborate among our various specialists to optimize outcomes (anesthesia/pain/rehab medicine/neurology/internal medicine/surgery). We also are a very dynamic academic practice and constantly monitor contemporary research, keeping an eye out for potential new treatments we can offer our patients if we think they will be safe and effective.
