How Runners Can Benefit from Chiropractic Care

You have logged miles and miles as you run through the half-empty streets that are home to the normally packed New York City Marathon. Although the race will not feel the same as cheering family and friends at the finish line, the training requires extra special attention this year.

With a pandemic comes work from home and altered workout routines. Even if you have been running diligently throughout the summer in preparation, other aspects of your training have likely gone to the wayside. By that I mean, variation in training days (ie Strength Training) as well as an increase in stress both mentally and physically.

Chiropractic care is not simply the manipulation of restricted joints. As much as that ‘crack’ and ‘pop’ feel good, there are various benefits to working with a Chiropractor. Through manipulation, soft tissue mobilization, and breathing assessments, you can provide your body with relief from:

  • Restrictions in joints
  • Release muscle tension
  • Relieve trigger points
  • Decrease stress
  • Decrease your risk of muscle strains and sprains

Now, you might be thinking, “I have been running multiple times a week with minimal discomfort so why would I need care if I am not in pain?” Although you may not be feeling severe discomfort or pain right now, pushing your body through 20 miles of consistent running does more than just make you tired. That foam roller isn’t going to cure everything.

This year, thousands of American’s have resorted to working from home. While general pain and tightness can occur in your neck from working on your computer, you may not be considering your seated posture with your running.

What do I mean? Joint restrictions can creep up while you are working in a stagnant position and then become the reason your run feels ‘off’. Remember, what you do for 70-80% of the day will trickle into your movement routines.

Along with joint restrictions come muscle tightness and even spasms. These patterns can be formed throughout the whole body. This is also known as compensation patterns. How does that calf tightness post-run play a role in your tight neck and vice versa? A Chiropractor can help assess you and then treat using techniques that target specific muscles, such as Active Release Technique (ART).

We want you to feel your very best not only on race day but daily. As providers, we work together to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan for you so that you can continue to do what you love without pain and discomfort. To make it through race day and the ever-changing world we are living in, whole-body care is vital.
