DEXA Scans

DEXA Body Fat & Bone Density

What it is:

The DEXA scan, which stands for dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, is considered to be the gold standard for analyzing body composition. The DEXA scan is a minimally invasiveprocedure that takes about 15 – 20 minutes to perform. It works by aiming two X-rays at the bones while scanning your body, executing this with minimal radiation exposure, providing you with accurate results of your body fat percentage, lean body mass, skeletal muscle mass, and is often used by professionals to predict osteopenia and osteoporosis by measuring bone mineral density as well.

Body Fat:

What do my results mean?

Your DEXA body composition report will give you

  1. Visual image of the precise location of bone, lean mass and fat mass.
  2. Plot of % body fat compared to your age group.
  3. Precise fat mass, lean mass and % body fat measurements of each area.

How soon should I follow up?

This largely depends on an individual’s goals and intentions around their health, which are different for everyone. For example, if your goals are short-term and relatively drastic (lose 5% body fat in 3 months), it’s smart to schedule a DEXA scan every 6-8 weeks.

Bone Density:

What do my results mean?

Your DEXA bone density results will give you two numerical results – your Z-score and T-score. The T-score shows how much higher or lower your bone density is than that of a healthy 30-year old, the age when bones are at their strongest. Your Z-score is representative of the average values for a person of your same age and gender. In short, the lower your score, the weaker your bones are.

Our services:

DEXA scanning provides concrete data that shows how a program is – or isn’t – working, which informs next steps in a nutrition or fitness plan to yield desired results. Our in- house nutritionists can bring more insight into your specific needs based on your goals, but it’s important to routinely scan to understand how your body composition changes after time spent following a specific plan, or to intervene if body composition has changed.
